The internet is one of the most significant polluters of the environment and as a cloud provider, we are well aware that we share some of the responsibility. That is why we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint as much as possible.
Tilaa works according to the 'reduce, reuse, and recycle' principle. We do everything we can to incorporate environmentally friendly solutions into all of our processes, which is fully consistent with this philosophy. We work in a BREEAM-certified sustainable building, recycle our hardware, and collaborate with partners who share our values.
We believe that a green approach is a viable path to a more sustainable internet. That's why we focus on conscious initiatives.
Renewable energy is an essential condition for a sustainable future. That is why , all of our cloudservers are already powered by 100% renewable energy. The PUE is 1.2, which is lower than the market average.
Since 2009, BREEAM-NL has been the certification method for a sustainable built environment. Projects can be evaluated for improved sustainability using this method.
The Green Web Foundation is a non-profit based in the Netherlands and Berlin working towards a fossil-free internet by 2030. It tracks and accelerates the transition to a fossil-free internet.
Tilaa works with Iron Mountain data centers. Iron Mountain is a member of The Climate Pledge and is active worldwide. The goal is to run on 100% clean energy by 2040, 100% of the time.
Iron Mountain in Amsterdam is a participant in a municipal project that returns residual heat to the municipality of Haarlem (Waarderpolder) and the data center is BREEAM certified.
Do you want to know more about Iron Mountain? We spoke with Eric Lisica, Operations Director of Iron Mountain Datacenters in Haarlem, Frankfurt, and London, at the start of the corona crisis.
At NorthC, the ambitions are great and the collaborations clever. For example, the new data center in Groningen is one of the first in the world and the first in Europe to use green hydrogen to create a completely CO2-neutral emergency power supply.
NorthC is recycling heat in a number of ways. For example by heating a garden center, a children's center, and a sports building. But they are going even further. NorthC is a part of a heat network that serves over 10,000 homes in that area. We're talking about an entire district that can operate without gas.
Tilaa chooses servers based on the power consumption per VPS delivered, allowing us to drastically reduce energy consumption. Furthermore, we only purchase new (energy-efficient) machines when more than 85% of our platform is occupied. This way, we avoid wasting resources while still leaving space for incidents and emergencies.
Is a server or other piece of hardware outdated? Then there are 3 choices. We recycle it with a partner, keep it as a testing machine, or send it to a new location such as donation or education.
